Greece’s charm is found in the variety of experiences it offers. Before arriving in Athens, I spent a few days on the island of Kos for a friend’s wedding. They were married at sunset, with the Aegean Sea bathed in hues of pink and red as the sun dipped below the horizon, the mountains of Turkey just visible beyond the coastline. I spent days swimming in clear turquoise waters, basking on pebble beaches, dipping into thermal baths, and exploring old ancient ruins. We visited a few islands, but by far, my favorite had to be Milos. When it was time to leave the island, Athens was a ferry ride away—a dense city waiting to be explored.
Athens, one of the oldest cities in the world, wears its history proudly. From nearly any vantage point in the city, you can spot remnants of its ancient past. One moment you could be driving along the coast watching boats go by; then savoring lunch at a rooftop restaurant with a view of the Parthenon; or later, enjoying a drink at a local pub tucked within a graffiti-covered neighborhood. This striking juxtaposition makes Athens an incredibly unique and unforgettable experience.
What to See
The Acropolis
Hiking up to the Parthenon in the summer heat is no easy feat, but the breathtaking views make it all worthwhile. Standing at over 3,000 years old, the Acropolis is an archaeological heaven. Surrounding this iconic site are ancient structures like the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, and others, each steeped in history and richly decorated. What’s truly amazing about Athens is it gives visitors a seamless blend of modern life and an intimate connection with its epic past. The Acropolis opens at 9 A.M., but I recommend arriving 30 minutes early to beat the crowds.
Anthologist
Andria Mitsakos, founder of Anthologist, has always had a keen eye for finely crafted artisanal goods. Through her travels, she’s been able to procure vintage kimonos, woven textiles, beautiful antique jewelry, and other found objects. Her shop, Anthologist, is an intentional representation of her appreciation for art in life. The shop is a multifaceted space—part showroom, part event venue, part gallery, and retail destination all in one. After you’ve hit up just about every vendor in the Monastiraki flea market, a visit to Anthologist is a must—but remember, it’s by appointment only. Inside, you’ll discover an array of handbags, accessories, paper goods, and ceramics, all crafted by local artisans.
Athens Riviera
If you find the beaches still calling your name, a quick trip to the Athens Riviera is just what you need. Located only about 30 minutes from central Athens by car, it’s easily accessible, even by public transportation. Once there, settle into a beach club of your choice, where you’ll have ample time to unwind before heading back to the city for dinner with friends.
Where to Eat
GB Roof Garden Restaurant and Bar
At the Hotel Grande Bretagne Roof Garden, feeling special comes easy. This long-standing hotel is synonymous with elegance and luxury, and the experience only deepens as you make your way to the eighth-floor rooftop. There, you’re greeted by a view unlike any other—the Acropolis poised in the distance. The menu is based on Mediterranean culinary tradition, offering a dining experience as unforgettable as the vista. I highly recommend reserving a table for 8 P.M. You’ll catch the sunset as it begins to dip around 8:30 P.M., and then once the sky starts to darken, you can see all the city lights begin to twinkle as the Acropolis becomes illuminated in spotlight. Order the smoked Tsakonian eggplant and the calamarata with king crab.
Papadakis
Celebrity chef Argiro Barbarigou had a dream and ran with it. Raised on the island of Paros with a deep passion for cooking, Barbarigou honed her craft through hands-on experience with her family before opening her first restaurant in her hometown. Now, her acclaimed restaurant sits atop a charming hill in Kolonaki, Athens. Since its doors opened in 2005, this restaurant has become a beloved destination for great Greek cuisine. A place with personality and warmth, you’re immediately greeted by the owners upon arrival. The charming outdoor seating offers a great view of the Parthenon in the distance. Loved by locals and cherished by tourists alike, this restaurant is sure to impress. Be sure to order the fried zucchini blossoms, fava bean purée, and the spicy linguini with prawns.
Flint Athens
For a casual lunch or dinner, be sure to hit the Athens staple Flint, just steps away from the bustling Psirri Square. Flint offers an eclectic take on familiar Greek staples with thoughtful plating in a beautiful skylit courtyard. Not to be missed: their Greek olive martinis and exceptional fries.
Where to Drink
Wine Is Fine
Nestled in the lively Monastiraki neighborhood, Wine Is Fine is a chic bar-restaurant with French allure. The menu highlights seasonal, locally sourced dishes and snacks, perfectly complemented by a wide variety of Greek and French natural wines. At night, the location transforms, as all the outdoor seating fully opens up. Wine flows freely, bread and cigarettes are shared among friends, and the air hums with conversation, creating a lively atmosphere that’s hard to resist.
Warehouse
This spot has something for everyone—whether you’re a coffee aficionado, a food enthusiast, or a wine lover. Situated on a sun-soaked corner in the vibrant Exarcheia neighborhood, Warehouse offers an impressive selection of over 200 wines. For a truly personalized experience, indulge in a food-and-wine pairing with your own private menu. If you’re ordering right off their menu, I recommend the sea bream ceviche with a glass of Sauvignon blanc.
The Stranger
A beloved local staple, The Stranger is the go-to spot for a laid-back beer before a big night out. With outdoor seating and intimate booths inside, it’s the perfect meeting point for friends. The bar offers an impressive selection of whiskeys and beers for those who prefer a little variety. Dimly lit with moody red lighting and music set at just the right volume, The Stranger creates a familiar, inviting ambiance that makes it easy to unwind.
