Experts Recommend These Korean Hair Care Products For Thicker, Healthier Strands

K-beauty takes a scalp-first approach to rich and luscious hair.

By

It’s no secret that Korean skin care products are often years ahead of the entire beauty industry. Those miracle working ingredients don’t stop at the hairline. In fact, there’s much to learn from Korean hair care routines, too, and a lot of it mirrors what we already know and love from our favorite K-beauty products. “Korean hair care borrows from K-beauty philosophy: scalp-first, multi-step, and prevention-focused. It’s gentler on cleansing, works to keep the scalp microbiome balanced, and layers hydration instead of masking damage,” says board-certified dermatologist, Zion Ko Lamm, MD. While many of the hair care products we find in America focus on treating damaged hair, the best Korean hair care products meet the problem at its root: the scalp. “Korea isn’t just producing surface-level shine products,” says board-certified dermatologist Joyce Park, MD, FAAD. “We’re seeing next level skin care actives and ingredients that K-Beauty has long been famous for, now being used in scalp and hair products.”

And what are those skin care actives, you might ask? “Korean formulations have long leaned on herbal extracts like ginseng, green tea, and ginger to promote circulation and scalp vitality, as well as soothing botanicals such as centella asiatica, aloe, and tea tree to calm irritation,” says Dr. Park. Many of the products she recommends below feature these healing properties, too. You’ll also find a deeper focus on “nourishing plant oils, proteins like camellia, argan, and soybean for hydration and strength,” she continues.

Keep in mind that Korea has different hair styling trends, too, which ultimately dictate what care is then needed. “It’s typical to see frequent chemical services, from coloring and bleaching to semi-permanent perms, starting at a younger age than in many Western countries. This means products are developed with a dual focus: repairing and reinforcing hair that has been structurally weakened by chemical treatments, and preserving scalp health so hair can continue to grow strong over time,” says Dr. Lamm. With a focus on science-backed formulas that prevent, treat, and heal your hair, we found the 15 best Korean hair care products, including Dr. Park and Dr. Lamm’s personal favorites.

Best Shampoo

Ryo Damage Care & Nourishing Shampoo

Damage Care & Nourishing Shampoo

Pros

  • Strengthens hair follicles
  • Good for sensitive skin

Cons

  • Some complain about damaged packaging

Let’s start with the basics, which are good shampoos and conditioners. Dr. Park recommends this option from Ryo as it “uses ginseng and camellia oil to strengthen brittle strands while calming the scalp down.” Aside from cleansing the scalp of the day’s grime, it actually improves the scalp’s condition, enabling it to hold onto hair strands better. Let’s not forget that it smells absolutely delightful!

Key ingredients: Caffeine, Camellia Oil, Pomegranate, Hyaluronic Acid, Lactic Acid

Customer reviews: “I first used this shampoo during a trip to Seoul and have been searching for it ever since! It smells amazing—fresh and clean without being overpowering—and most importantly, it doesn’t irritate my sensitive scalp at all.”

Best Conditioner

Jin Gi Vitalizing Hair Treatment

  • In this case, the word treatment means conditioner, which confuses some

This hair treatment by Daeng Gi Meo Ri is “another cult favorite, and it’s rich in ginseng, green tea, and chrysanthemum extracts to boost scalp vitality,” says Dr. Park. It does everything from deep conditioning your hair to controlling dandruff, leaving you with an overall improved appearance on your head. Perfect for damaged hair in need of a little TLC.

Perfect Serum Original

Both Dr. Park and Dr. Lamm recommend this hair serum. It’s one of the most popular serums in Korea, says Dr. Park, and uses “argan oil and proteins to smooth, add shine, and repair damage to your hair strands,” she continues. Dr. Lamm chimes in that despite being an oil, it’s “rich yet lightweight, so it controls frizz and adds shine without leaving your hair looking greasy.”

Size: 2.71 oz.

Dr. Park says that what sets Korean hair care apart from the West is a scalp-first philosophy. “Just like in skin care, the belief is that healthy, strong healthy hair begins with a balanced scalp,” she says, and it’s products like this scalp strengthening spray that boost skin health for optimal hair growth. It uses plant-derived probiotics to reinforce scalp barrier and strengthen hair roots. A mix of green tea extract, ginger extract, and hyaluronic acid work together in creating a strong base for your hair.

What are some Korean hair care trends?

elle thick line break

“Korean hair care trends focus on scalp health as the basic foundation of healthy hair,” says Dr. Park. “Scalp toners, essences, and serums are reframing multi-step hair care routines as part of your self care, while traditional hanbang herbs like ginseng and pumpkin seed oil are being combined with newer actives for more scalp and hair support.” Dr. Park also mentions a rise in a “head spa” culture, which are luxurious Korean salon rituals where they serve scalp exfoliation, massages, and steam cap treatments. “At-home treatments inspired by these head spas, as a result, are also popular,” she says. “What’s exciting is how Korea is merging its rich heritage of herbs and rituals with science-backed innovation. I love to use the products and recommend them to patients!”
