After SZA received an outstanding nine nominations at this year’s Grammy Awards (making her the most nominated artist tonight), it didn’t come as a huge surprise when she took home the awards for Best Progressive R&B Album (SOS), Best R&B Song (“Snooze”), and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (“Ghost In The Machine” featuring Phoebe Bridgers). This is the first time the artist has won solo Grammys.

The singer-songwriter gracefully accepted the honor for Best R&B Song, presented by Lizzo, with a heartfelt speech.

“Sorry, I’m out of breath. because I was changing. Then I took a shot, and I ran here,” SZA said, after actually running onto the stage and hugging Lizzo. “But Lizzo and I have been friends since 2013 when we were both on a tiny Red Bull tour together, opening up in small rooms for like 100 people. And to be on the stage with her is so amazing. I’m so grateful.”

“I would like to thank my parents, my mom and my dad, God, Top Dawg, Punch, all of TDE and my siblings at TDE, to my godparents, to my niece,” she continued.

“I just... I’m sorry, I’m just really overwhelmed,” she said, while trying not to cry. “You don’t really understand. I came really, really far, and I can’t believe this is happening, and it feels very fake.”

She then closed out her speech with a shoutout to Taylor Swift: “And... Hi Taylor! I love you. I’m just really grateful. And I’m not an attractive crier. Have a good evening.”

SZA received her first Grammy Award at the 2022 ceremony. She was awarded Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her feature in Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More.”
