On Friday, Beyoncé stunned the crowd at Houston’s Shell Energy Stadium, making an appearance for Kamala Harris’s campaign rally. As the Vice President continues her presidential campaign against Donald Trump, celebrities have shown up to endorse her candidacy. Also at the event were Beyoncé’s Destiny’s Child bandmate Kelly Rowland, her mother, Tina Knowles, and country music icon Willie Nelson.
Beyoncé introduced Harris to the crowd. In her opening remarks, the super star focused on the importance of this political moment and how it is personal for her.
“We are at the precipice of an incredible shift, the brink of history,” Beyoncé said to the crowd. “I’m not here as a celebrity. I’m not here as a politician. I’m here as a mother. A mother who cares deeply about the world my children and all of our children live in. A world where we have the freedom to control our bodies. A world where we’re not divided.”
She continued, “We’re all part of something much bigger. We must vote, and we need you. Let’s do this. Ladies and gentlemen, give a big, loud Texas welcome to the next president of the United States, Kamala Harris.”
When Harris took the stage, she spoke about the importance of reproductive rights.
“In America, freedom is not to be given,” Harris stated. “It is not to be bestowed. It is ours. By right. And that includes the fundamental freedom of a woman to make decisions about her own body and not have the government telling her what to do.”
Harris continued, “Women have died because of Trump abortion bans. In just four years as president, Donald Trump was able to erase half a century of hard-fought progress for women. Now he wants to go even further… If Trump wins again, he will ban abortion nationwide.”
Other celebrities who have stepped forward to endorse Harris or make appearances at her events include Taylor Swift, Mindy Kaling, Kerry Washington, Pink, Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Patti LaBelle, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez, Ben Stiller, Julia Roberts, and Meryl Streep.
