In 2019, then-friends Rihanna and A$AP Rocky posed together at The Fashion Awards. Now, five years later, they’re back as a couple and parents of two.
This evening in London, Rihanna and Rocky stepped out for the 2024 ceremony, both dressed in blue. Rihanna, as is her wont, opted for the more dramatic outfit, wearing an bright blue furry wrap coat with a black corset underneath. The ensemble is a Christian Lacroix fall/winter 2002 couture look. She added black leather opera gloves from Paula Rowan and a giant turquoise wide brim hat. For his part, Rocky was sharply dressed in a navy suit jacket and pants with a red tie from Bottega Veneta.
When they first attended the event in 2019, Rihanna wore a mint green ensemble. News of the pair dating came out a year later, in December 2020. A People source at the time called it “a new relationship, but they both seem very into it.”
This past April, Rihanna spoke to Interview about her and Rocky’s history as friends—and why they decided to take the plunge and explore their romantic potential. Things did change at the end of 2019; they just kept it secret for a year.
“We’ve known each other for a long time,” she explained. “I’ve seen him in relationships. He’s seen me in relationships. We’ve seen each other outside of relationships. We knew what we’re capable of, and the trouble that we could bring to each other’s lives. We can make or break each other’s hearts. And so, we started dating with a lot of caution.”
She added, “I just let whatever was supposed to happen, happen. It was just, ‘This is a flower. It’s either going to die or blossom. But I’m going to let it decide itself.’”
