On Sunday, country music star Kacey Musgraves walked into a big evening at the Grammys, starting with a grand moment on the red carpet. The songwriter wore a white tank top paired with a gold fringe maxi skirt from Ralph Lauren. She had her hair styled down.

Musgraves is nominated for five awards, all for her March 2024 album Deeper Well, including Best Country Song, Best Country Solo Performance, Best Country Album, Best Americana Performance, and Best Engineered Album Non-Classical. The first two categories were both directed at her track “The Architect.”

When the album was released, Musgraves spoke to NPR about the meaning behind the title, saying, “I think of a well as sort of like a connection to a source—you know, a channel to get to a deeper place that we all need in order to live, to love, to know ourselves. Deeper Well is sort of an ode to removing resistance to growth, in whatever way that might mean.”

She added, “I feel very grounded where I’m at. I feel very, like, at peace. I’m in my mid-30s now, and I just went through a little bit of a rough period. But I feel like on the other side of that and, you know, I’ve learned a lot about myself.”

That same month, she spoke with The Cut about the rising popularity of country music as a genre, stating, “The more the fucking merrier..I don’t really care. It doesn’t affect what I’m doing. It doesn’t affect me. I’ve always been just doing my own thing. It’s just fun to watch.”

She shared that she wrote much of Deeper Well in the city rather than the country, heading to the iconic Electric Lady Studios in New York.

“I find it really ironic that I was able to tap into a more rootsy, folky, softer side in the middle of New York City. Some of my more country stuff came out again there,” Musgraves said.
