Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco are turning up the heat on “Cowboy,” a sexy new track on their joint album, I Said I Love You First. With that in mind, you can probably infer that the song is not about horses and lassos. “Goin’ all around, boy, ride it like a cowboy,” Gomez sings in the chorus. Go off!
This isn’t the first time the singer has explored more sensual themes in her music. In fact, she likened the new song to one of her earlier hits. “‘Cowboy’ is my version of ‘Good for You’ but now,” she said in a joint interview with Blanco for Spotify. “I don’t like to share it a lot, but I’m a very sensual person. And I love love and sometimes I put that into words and I can feel sexy, and I love that feeling.”
In the same interview, Blanco told Gomez that the song is “a cool nod back to where you came from.”
The couple, who announced their engagement in December, also shared what it was like expressing their most private thoughts and emotions in their music. “I feel like writing a song is also like being in therapy, so you can say things. It’s almost like a safe place. You can say things you would never tell a person, let alone like your partner,” Blanco said.
“You can almost say anything,” he continued. “It’s like saying your deepest darkest secret, and it doesn’t count because it’s in a song. It was really interesting getting to learn things about you that I’m not sure I’d be able to get out if we were in a different arena.”
Gomez added, “Yeah, that was so crazy that while we were doing this album, we told each other [so much]—because mind you, the whole album isn’t just about my life. It’s about your experiences, our experiences together.”
