There’s always one pan in the eyeshadow palette that wins the popularity contest. Usually a reliable matte taupe or soft shimmering champagne, these hues are the ones we reach for on autopilot each morning, with the surrounding shades rarely getting a look in.

The easy wearability of monochromatics was the inspiration behind Glossier’s latest launch. Each reusable and refillable Monochromes eye palette (of which there are 10) contains three versions of the same, wear-every-day shade: one matte, one satin, and one metallic. Worn alone, each one is an easy eye enhancer – but teamed together, possibilities abound.
'I like to start with a matte shade that I sweep over the entire eye and then amplify the look by adding the metallic or satin shade into the contours of the eye,' says Hughes.
If you haven’t found your forever eyeshadow shade yet, or fancy trying something new, there’s likely something to suit here. The palettes all fit within a non-scary spectrum, although the cool lilac Mist and burnt-orange Mesa will push you slightly out of the neutral zone.
Hughes recommends the warmer tones, such as Mesa, Prairie, or Clay for blue and green eyes, and the jewel tones of Heather, Mist, or Roisin for brown eyes. 'But there truly are no rules—you can do whatever feels right! It's always fun to play with colour.'
