The 9 Best Foundations For Dry Skin That Won't Cake Or Crack

Meet the new cohort of nourishing and radiance-boosting bases - all tried and tested.

By

If you're looking for a foundation for dry skin that doesn't cling on to flaky patches or leave the complexion looking flat, we've got you covered. Whether you need a foundation formula that feels like second skin, something to encourage radiance or a foundation that's kind on acne-prone skin, we've scoured the aisles to find exactly what your thirsty complexion needs.

The Best Foundations For Dry Skin, Tried And Tested

How to find the right foundation for dry skin

'Dry skin should be tackled from the base; primers and moisturisers are a great start,' advises pro make-up artist Nikita Baffour. However, the best results really depend on the foundation formula you choose: it’s best to avoid mattifying ones and instead opt for something designed to hydrate: many good options contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and vitamin E.'

Baffour uses water-based foundations on her clients with dry skin, and recommends ‘sheer or medium-coverage textures that deliver a softer, luminous finish.’ You can always employ a concealer to cover any breakouts or red patches.

Another great move is to consider the new school of tinted moisturisers and serum foundations, which generally come with more humectant power and less pigment, delivering a touch of coverage without a cakey finish. Creamier textures are a good option too; start with a small amount and build up rather than applying a generous dollop. If you're looking a little shiny at midday, try dabbing away excess oil with a blotting paper rather than piling on face powder.

    How We Test...

Whilst I'm usually one for using foundations made for combination to oily skin types, being on tretinoin means that my complexion feels drier than ever - with flaky patches and areas prone to light peeling. These are the cohort of foundation formulas that I've been relying on during these drier times. I also made sure to get the entire beauty team involved, as so many of us are plagued with dry complexions.

When testing, we analysed how it felt on the skin throughout the day, inspected for any cakiness, made sure the ingredients did not cause irritation or breakouts and took stock of how well the formula lasted. We also considered its texture, finish and shade range to ensure there's something for everyone.

Givenchy's Prisme Libre powders are well-loved for their four-toned, colour-correcting pigments. This foundation essentially harnesses that expertise to counteract any sallowness, dullness and redness while Prismatic Light™ Technology promises to give a candlelit glow to the skin. It's essentially glassy, glossy skin - in a bottle.

Lady Gaga's make-up line flies under the radar, but it is a force to be reckoned with, especially if you're prone to sensitivity. It's formulated with fermented arnica as the key ingredient, which addresses redness and calms easily irritated complexions. Meanwhile, squalane, sweet almond oil and camellia seed oil provides lasting nourishment to parched skin types. It doesn't cause breakouts, either.

This high performance formula imparts a perfected finish that lasts, without feeling heavy. It seamlessly covers acne, scars and hyperpigmentation, all while looking completely fresh and natural. The extensive colour range sets the bar high, too.

Anyone who has used a tretinoin product before will know that the dryness is almost impossible to cover: even the most moisturising formulas highlight flakiness.

Well, MAC’s Studio Radiance foundation is the solution. The light, watery texture skims over those peeling patches, making everything look hydrated and happy – even at close range.

It won’t cover blemishes or thread veins, but will deliver that glowy, glass-skin effect on skin that's in the midst of a flaky, raw tretinoin purge. It’s too viscous for a brush, apply with fingers for best results.

    Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint

    Super Serum Skin Tint

Ilia's skin tint combines surprisingly high coverage with SPF 30, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. It's definitely the dewiest of the whole bunch – so much so, we're surprised there are no oils involved. One use, and you'll fully understand why it's Sephora's bestselling base product in the States. The only downside is the smell: it's not artificially fragranced, so it does have a bit of a musty aroma.
