ELLE Edit: The Best Peptide Moisturisers, According To A Beauty Editor
Forget heavy, clogging creams, peptide-infused formulas are the secret to glassy, bouncy skin.

As a beauty editor, I am constantly asked for recommendations on getting the 'glass skin' look; where complexions appear impeccably glossy and smooth. Many often think it comes down to exfoliating, and while regular exfoliation can help slough away dullness-causing dead skin cells, overuse of face scrubs can be to your own detriment. See: a raw, irritated complexion.
For me, the real secret to a complexion as dewy as a flower petal after a light rain has always been down to one particular science-driven ingredient: peptides. Found in serums and moisturisers, peptides encourage healthy skin as a whole rather than just polishing the surface. And healthier skin means an improved glow and a plumper texture.

What are peptides?
This cheat sheet on peptides will tell you all you need to know about the ingredient but essentially, 'peptides are short chains of amino acids that serve as the building blocks of proteins, such as collagen and elastin, which are crucial for maintaining skin's structure and elasticity,' explains consultant dermatologist Dr Derrick Phillips.
From moisturisers for dry skin to face creams for mature complexions, treatments that contain peptides will fast-track your way to bouncier skin. For those with oily skin, stick to formulas that are free-from heavy emollients.
How do peptides work?
Peptides are one of the most hardworking ingredients in skincare. 'When applied topically, peptides can signal the skin to produce more collagen, potentially leading to firmer, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin. They also have the ability to improve skin barrier function, hydration, and reduce inflammation,' shares Dr Phillips, who adds that peptide moisturisers are safe for use both morning and evening, unless the formula contains actives such as exfoliating acids or retinol.
While the benefits of peptides are impressive, it's always important to look at a skincare formula as a whole. Dr Tatiana Madavia agrees, saying, 'To bolster the benefits of peptides, I would also suggest using other skincare products in your regime that include ingredients like niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C.'
Dr Phillips echoes this thought. According to him, the addition of hyaluronic acid will enhance hydration and restore volume, while antioxidants such as vitamin C and E will shield against environmental damage. Niacinamide helps to improve the skin barrier function and ease inflammation. 'Combining peptides with retinoids can boost collagen production and improve skin elasticity, although this should be used carefully to avoid irritation. Additionally, ceramides and fatty acids can work alongside peptides to strengthen the skin barrier and maintain moisture,' he says.
Who would benefit from a peptide moisturiser?
Peptides are safe for all skin types, so everyone can benefit. That said, if you're looking to address fine lines, loss of firmness, and wrinkles, peptides are a skin essential. 'It is also advantageous for those seeking improved skin hydration, enhanced barrier function, and overall skin health,' says Dr Phillips.
