Kate Middleton paid tribute to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana by wearing her tiara to the annual Diplomatic Corps reception at Buckingham Palace last night.

The Duchess of Cambridge, who recently met with Donald and Melania Trump, looked regal in the historic hair piece that contrasted with her deep blue velvet V-neck Alexander McQueen gown.

The tiara has a rich history, having been created in 1914 for Queen Mary, worn by Queen Elizabeth II and subsequently gifted to Princess Diana - who passed away in 1997 - following her wedding to Prince Charles in in 1981.

The accessory was one of Princess Diana's favourite pieces but was returned to the Palace after her divorce from the Prince of Wales in 1996.

Now, the diadem has found a new owner in the form of Kate, who first wore it in 2015.

The Duchess also wore another important piece of jewellery last night, her Royal Family Order.

First worn by the Duchess of Cambridge in October last year, the honour is bestowed by the Queen to female members of the royal family for services to the sovereign, and is to be worn at black tie occasions.

The brooch features a miniature portrait of the Queen which is pinned onto a yellow ribbon and is also worn by the Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Anne and the Countess of Wessex. Kate's brooch in particular is made from glass, rather than the traditional ivory.

Alongside The Royal Order, the 37-year-old wore a blue red and white sash that signifies her position as a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.
