Instead, the 'tailored for you' dresscode, which was drawn up to complement the exhibition theme of 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style' saw Black style and its long-standing influence taking centre stage. All eyes were on Rihanna as she made her ever-anticipated return to the Met Gala stairs. Using the moment to announce her third pregnancy, she wore a bespoke Marc Jacobs look that found inspiration in the theme. What's also worth noting is how the ensemble pays subtle, even if unknowing, homage to Diana, Princess of Wales. Sure, the late Princess loved polka dots too, but it's the crop of the jacket that aligns here. Blazers such as these are styled as 'Spencer' jackets and take their inspiration from George John Spencer, 2nd Earl Spencer, who lived between 1754 and 1838. Fast forward just over 200 years later and Diana was born to the 8th Earl Spencer in 1961.

Pamela Anderson Shone Bright In Last Year's Sparkle

Anderson continued her crusade for shining bright at red-carpet events with her Met Gala look. While her Tory Burch 'floating neckline' dress might have exuded femininity, its making was far more masculine and was constructed using traditional menswear techniques that included hand-sculpted boning. The exterior was embroidered in Italy, before being put together in Burch's NYC atelier. Not fixed with the sparkle being solely on her dress, Anderson completed the look with an ear of Pandora diamonds. While the composition might have been new, the 24 carats of lab-grown diamonds were all repurposed from the jewellery she wore at her first Met Gala in 2024.

'For Tems, we didn’t just design a look — we created a new form,' explains London-based designer Ozwald Boateng of the look he created for the musician. 'It's a silhouette that moves between worlds, just like she does.' The house described it as a 'ball gown suit' with a tailored waistcoat anchoring the top half before falling into a voluminous puff skirt. The fabrication proved to be perfect for the Met's blue carpet with a Boateng's signature tribal jacquard adding to the narrative of the dress in waves of blue, purple, and teal. 'It’s a tapestry of identity, strength, and graceful rebellion.'

It was a stellar night for Maximillian Davis. The British-Trinidadian designer who is at the helm at Ferragamo was the man behind looks for Kylie Jenner, Paloma Elsesser, Ayo Edibiri and Lakeith Stanfield. A stylish cohort who proved the singularity of Davis' ability with both cut and colour.

In doing so, the designer also played homage to the house's founder, Salvatore Ferragamo, who had a strong bond with Hollywood's biggest players. 'I find inspiration in the timeless artistry and innovation that Ferragamo represents,' he said. 'The Met Gala is more than just an event; it is a celebration of creativity and individuality. As someone who embraces my own heritage and identity, I am honoured to continue the legacy of our founder, connecting the glamour and history of Hollywood with the passion and craftsmanship that define Ferragamo today.'

Firmly establishing himself as one of the night's best dressed guests from the moment he stepped onto the blue carpet, Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton's ivory wool look deserves further examination for its inspirations and execution.

Designed by Wales Bonner, it was inspired by the paintings and photographs of Barkley L. Hendricks, elements of Black spiritual dressing and the London-based label’s own craft signatures including cowrie shell embellishments.

The evening's look also featured a foray by Wales Bonner into fine jewellery, in collaboration with SNOW Diamonds, which held 'stories and symbolism, as if amulets.' Here, emerald-cut diamonds in white, amber, and garnet were employed to add additional visual intrigue to the elegant suit set that pulled on a silhouette from the Wales Bonner archive.

The White Lotus actor attended her very first Met Gala wearing a look by Alhuwalia. Created in close collaboration with founder and creative director Priya Alhuwalia, it was was a hybrid ensemble that pulled together a multitude of sources and references for inspiration.

'The look draws on the rich cultural tapestry of the Black diaspora, and is most specifically influenced by the vibrant and revolutionary spirit of the "Saupers", who represent the dandy subculture in Congo' explained Alhuwalia. 'Other inspiration for the look came from archive imagery of Black American dandies and some archive imagery of Diana Ross's tailoring looks.'

You have to wonder then if Wood was able to explain to Ms Ross, who was also in attendance on the night, what inspiration she had been for the look.

Alhuwalia completed the look with a blooming lovely supply of flowers that 'represent different nations: the Nymphaea Pygmaea Helvola Water Lily from Congo and the Yellow Trumpet from Nigeria for inspiration, each speaking to the unique histories and hopes of these nations. This look is a celebration of cultural pride and appreciation.'

The Blackpink idol wore a Louis Vuitton look by Pharrell Williams made up of a lace blazer and, well, little else. In lieu of suiting trousers, Lisa wore a pair of knickers that came embroidered with portraits by artist Henry Taylor, a frequent collaborator of Williams, set over Louis Vuitton's monogram, which extended down her opaque tights and miniature Speedy bag. On social media, conversations quickly began over who the portraits were of with the house sharing in a statement that it depicts 'portraits of figures who have been a part of the artist’s life.'

Understandably so, it was made up of a back-to-front sliced jacket and corset embroidered with crystals with a tulle multilayered skirt. And was finished with a custom black leather embroidered platform laced boots and a custom satin embroidered clutch.

Jodie Turner-Smith, with more than a little help from Burberry's Daniel Lee, paid homage to a singular historical figure: Selika Lazevski. Turner-Smith's burgundy ornate-embossed leather bustle coat was directly inspired by Lazevski, a Black Equestrian who lived during the Belle Époch in Paris and was photographed by Paul Nader in 1891. With a cinched in waist and an exaggerated top hat the look coopted Victorian fashions executed in hyper-luxe leather and ornate florals.
