Greta Gerwig fans, rejoice! The Barbie director — whose esteemed film is hitting cinemas later this month — is rumoured once again to be tackling another cultural stalwart.
According to the New Yorker, Gerwig is set to direct two films for Netflix based on C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia.
Netflix announced that it had acquired the film and TV rights to The Chronicles of Narnia book series in 2018. Ted Sarandos, CEO of Netflix, said at the time: ‘Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.’ But since the acquisition, the streaming service has yet to announce any projects based on the beloved book series.

This isn’t the first foray Netflix is making into acquiring the rights to beloved authors’ books; it has also bought the Roald Dahl Story Company. Netflix released a movie musical adaptation of Dahl’s Matilda while Wes Anderson recently completed an adaptation of the author’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.
The news comes as the latest in a long line of deals Gerwig has signed. The Lady Bird director is also going to be working with Disney in 2024 for the latest live-action adaptation of the fairy tale Snow White.
As of yet, there's no word on when production begins for Netflix’s adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia.
