Fans of Channel 4's The Couple Next Door need no disclaimer when it comes to the messiness that goes on in the cul-de-sac that is The Crescent, and since the release of season two on July 14, we've been welcomed back into the high-stakes drama that goes on in the street, as this season turned its focus to more inhabitants of the neighbourhood, both old and new.
Enter heart surgeon, Charlotte Roberts (Annabel Scholey), and her husband, consultant anaesthetist Jacob (Sam Palladio) who are central to the unfolding of the drama. On the surface the pair seem to be fairly happy, however, before long the cracks of their relationship become glaringly clear, thanks to the introduction of new neighbour and colleague Mia (Aggy K Adams).
Shrouded in mystery, Mia is a surgical nurse at the hospital who is anything but straightforward. On the run from a dark past, her enigmatic nature draws both Charlotte and Jacob in. Before long, her presence makes the couple wonder if their relationship needs shaking up - possibly with the help of Mia.

Adding fuel to the fire is Charlotte's ex, Leo (Sendhil Ramamurthy), whose surprise return home shocks everyone and threatens to dismantle her marriage even further. Soon it becomes clear that the duo has residual feelings left over from the relationship that they shared while in university.
But things start to turn as the couple increasingly welcome Mia into their relationship.
As expected, the series delivers on raunch - a given, of course, when you open your marriage to your neighbour and colleague, whose mystique quickly switches from charming to borderline dangerous. As well as this, the emotional fallout from their escapades comes to a head as Charlotte begins to develop feelings for Mia.
Before any of this can form any real shape, all eyes are on Mia for the wrong reasons as it emerges three hospital patients under her care have died mysteriously, including Leo's father - and she's banned from the hospital and talking to her colleagues. More questions about the mysterious nurse remain after her psychotherapist, who has been calling all series trying to track her down, ends up at her house.
Who has killed the patients in The Couple Next Door?
As the series comes to a close in the sixth episode, Charlotte begins to become suspicious of her husband - and whether he has an involvement in the three deaths at the hospital. She enlists the help of Leo and her friend, Gemma - and promises to keep him busy in surgery, while trying to act normally.
Eventually it becomes clear Jacob was the culprit, not Mia - and he confesses to Charlotte. After a mistake with the first patient, he decided that framing Mia for more deaths would lead to Mia getting in trouble - and saving his marriage.
Jacob refuses to take the blame though, and instead drugs Charlotte and writes a suicide note that wrongly says she had lied for Mia. However, when CCTV of him entering Leo's father's room emerges, Leo, Ben and Gemma swiftly move to have Jacob arrested - and Charlotte is saved just in time.
What happens to Mia at the end of The Couple Next Door?
Despite Alan trying to pin her former therapist Isak's behaviour to him and calling the police, Isak gets away - with Mia's money that she took from her parents ill-gotten gains.
Mia then - once she knows Charlotte has survived - is clear to go where she wishes. Eventually, the viewer learns, she's settled in Antwerp (where she had that encounter with Charlotte and Jacob) and is acting as a tour guide. Though she does seem to set her sights on a new couple...
What happens to Alan in The Couple Next Door?
Alan is safe despite being thrown down the stairs, and completes his community service. He even finds a potential love interest in Mia's friend, Yvonne.
Between the series' steamy scenes, murky neighbours and concealed secrets, season two of The Couple Next Door is nothing short of a complete and total whirlwind.
