19 Most Awkward Oscar Moments, From Cringey Speeches To Pin-Drop Silences
Someone cue the ‘wrap up’ music

The Oscars deliver some of the most famous, awkward and hilarious moments in the entertainment calendar and this year we’re expecting no different, despite the Coronavirus pandemic.
In 2021, the Academy Awards will take place with a 'multi-location' format on April 25 due to the health crisis. The ceremony will see the likes of Carey Mulligan, Vanessa Kirby and Viola Davis battle it out for ‘Best Actress’, Riz Ahmed and Anthony Hopkins await to hear if their names are called for ‘Best Actor’ and our favourite directors of the moment Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) receive recognition for their achievement in directing.
But while we wait with bated breath to see the red carpet dresses, accessories, behind-the-scenes getting ready Instagrams, couple moments and hairstyles we’ll undoubtedly want to recreate, we’re equally – if not more – counting down the days until we spot the most awkward Oscar moments.
After all, if previous decades are anything to go by, the ceremony doesn’t fail to deliver some pretty nail-biting and pillow-covering-face moments. From cringey speeches and mispronunciation of names (hey, John Travolta), to falls on stage, unexpected kisses and performances, the Academy Awards are up there with some of the most unforgettable nights for near disaster and laugh-out-loud moments.
As a result, we’ve rounded up the best and most awkward Oscar moments to date, from the weird to the spine-tinglingly wonderful.
