The Holiday is up there among our favourite Christmas films of all time, taking its place with Love Actually and Home Alone.

It’s hard to believe the film came out on November 29, 2006 and brought together some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Jack Black and Kate Winslet.

The film explores the holidays of two women from England (Iris) and Los Angeles (Amanda) who hate the thought of spending Christmas alone in their respective homes and offer to swap abodes for the festive period. Little do they know that they’ll embark on a trip of a lifetime, involving romances and friendship.

With Christmas (sort of) just around the corner, here’s a look back at where the cast of The Holiday are now compared to 17 years ago.

Cameron Diaz Then

Her The Holiday angle: Diaz plays the work-obsessed Amanda, a movie executive who gets paid ‘the big bucks’ making trailers for Hollywood blockbusters. After learning her boyfriend Ethan has been cheating on her, Amanda finds solace in the Cotswolds and, despite wanting to steer clear of men, falls head over heels for Iris’ brother, Graham.

Diaz went on to marry musician Benji Madden and welcomed a daughter, Raddix, via surrogate in 2019. Diaz has since retired from acting (‘I got a peace in my soul, because I finally was taking care of myself,’ she told Gwyneth Paltrow in 2020), and launched her ‘clean’ wine brand Avaline in 2020.

Jude Law Then

His The Holiday angle: Law plays Graham, a publisher who is bringing up his two children following the death of his wife. While he’s known to have dated the ladies in his local village, he falls in love with Amanda after knocking at her door one night. He cries, he’s Mr Napkin Head… there’s seriously nothing we don’t love about Graham.

Jude Law Now

Law’s career has gone from strength-to-strength since his Graham days. He’s starred in blockbuster hits such as Sherlock Holmes, Captain Marvel and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindewald.

In 2017, his series The Young Pope received two Emmy nominations, becoming the first Italian TV series to be up for the gong. He also won an Honorary César in 2007.

Kate Winslet Then

Her The Holiday angle: In the film Winslet plays Iris, a journalist working in London and living out in the Cotswolds countryside who is suffering a bout of unrequited love from her colleague. After Diaz’s character offers to swap homes with her, Iris soon finds herself in Los Angeles, befriending a sweet elderly neighbour, finding her mojo and falling for Jack Black’s character.

In the years since The Holiday, Winslet has gone on to win countless awards for the likes of The Reader (Oscar), Revolutionary Road (Golden Globe) and Mare of Eastown (Emmy). Following her split from James Bond director Sam Mendes in 2011 the actor, who is a mother-of-three went on to marry Edward Abel Smith in 2012.

Winslet most recently starred alongside her 23-year-old daughter, Mia Threapleton in I Am Ruth, for which she won the 2023 British Academy Television Award for Best Single Drama. While accepting her award, Winslet tearfully dedicated it to her only daughter.

Rufus Sewell Then

His The Holiday angle: We’ll say it here and now. We despise gas-lighting Jasper for what he did to Iris. In the film Sewell plays a journalist who has toyed with Iris for years and knows he’s in love with her, yet proceeds to announce his engagement at the work Christmas party right in front of her. Despite Iris telling him she needs space and time to get over him, he proceeds to send her pages from his manuscript and turns up at her door in Los Angeles to say he wants her back. Fortunately, Iris comes to her senses.

Sewell is one of Britain’s best actors and has starred in several films such as Victoria, Judy, The Father and Old, as well as TV series like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Man In The High Castle.

Earlier this year, Netflix announced that Rufus will star in a film called 'Scoop', alongside Gillian Anderson, which will follow Prince Andrew’s Newsnight interview.

Eli Wallach Then

His The Holiday angle: Not only did Wallach have the most adorable name in The Holiday (Arthur Abbott), but he also taught us all about 'meet-cutes' and the importance of looking out for your neighbours. Abbott and Iris strike up a friendship early on in the film and she goes on to help him get into shape for his awards ceremony.

Sadly Wallach passed away in 2014, aged 98. Wallach boasted an incredible career during his lifetime, with roles in films such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and The Godfather: Part III.

Jack Black Then

His The Holiday angle: Black plays Miles, a score writer with a similar love for film, pasta and humour as us. When he meets Iris in Los Angeles he’s dating actor Maggie, who he believes is ‘on location’ shooting a film. But after learning she’s been cheating on him, Miles realises his friendship with Iris could be romantic, and the pair are incredibly loved-up by the end of the film.

Jack Black Now

It seems like Black hasn’t stopped working since The Holiday. He’s starred in films such as Goosebumps, Kung Fu Panda, Jumanji and Tropic Thunder.

In 2008 he received a Hollywood Walk of Fame and most recently went viral for stripping to his underwear and singing Taylor Swift during a fundraiser to support crew members amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Shannyn Sossamon Then

Her The Holiday angle: Sossamon plays Maggie, the actor who cheats on her boyfriend Miles. She doesn’t actually appear in the film that often, but we learn that her character has pretended to be on location in New Mexico when actually she’s been living down the road from her partner. Not cool, Maggie.

Sossamon has had roles in films such as Sinister 2, One Missed Call and Road To Nowhere. She also provided vocals and played the drums in the indie band Warpaint between 2004 until 2008, exiting shortly after the band released their first EP.

A quick look at her Instagram account and she now has over 79,000 followers. In the summer of 2019 the actor launched a Kickstarter campaign for The Maude Room, which included a series of short performances.

Edward Burns Then

His The Holiday angle: Another man we dislike in this film is Burns’ character, Ethan. Fortunately his character doesn’t appear for long in the film, but long enough for us to learn he cheated on Amanda, his girlfriend, with his secretary and blames her lack of intimacy and emotion for the infidelity. The cheek of it! Move along, Ethan!

Burns has been married to model Christy Turlington since 2003 and is the father to their two children, Grace and Finn. In the years since The Holiday debuted, he’s starred in films such as 27 Dresses, Purple Violets and Friends With Kids.

John Krasinski Then

His The Holiday angle: Krasinski’s character is simply known as Ben and, from the looks of it, helps Amanda create trailers for a living.

The actor’s career has quite simply exploded since his appearance in The Holiday. He is the creator, writer and director of the A Quiet Place franchise, had roles in the likes of Shrek The Third, It’s Complicated and Free Guy, as well as starred in The Office US and taken the lead as Jack Ryan in Tom Clany’s Jack Ryan TV series.

He also married Emily Blunt in 2010, and is the father of the pair’s two daughters, Hazel and Violet.

19

Dustin Hoffman Then

His The Holiday angle: The award-winning actor plays himself in the film and made a cameo by accident. According to the film’s DVD commentary, Hoffman drove to the DVD shop where Winslet and Black filmed a scene and popped in to find out what was happening. Only in Hollywood, right?

Hoffman has starred alongside Black in the Kung Fu Panda franchise, as well as had roles in films like Little Fockers and Chef.

In 2017, the veteran actor was accused of sexual misconduct by several women, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Hoffman’s legal representatives later sent a letter to Variety describing the accusations as ‘defamatory falsehoods’, per the Guardian.

It was recently revealed that Hoffman will play the lead role in Peter Greenaway's latest film, 'Lucca Mortis'.
