The most moving quotes on hope, from the most inspirational women of 2024.

By Panashe Nyadundu

To say that 2024 has been a turbulent year would be a gross understatement. Both the UK and US have faced historic election years that have seen women's rights put under threat and the gender and class divide widen. The UK saw Labour beating the Conservatives for the first time in 14 years, meanwhile, the race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump will finally come to an end this week following the U.S. election on November 5.

In fashion, it's been no less of a rollercoaster - luxury houses have seen a high amount of creative designers make unexpected and sudden departures, making way for new talent amid a market facing ongoing financial pressure. And you only need look at the catwalk to see the alarming return to size zero and struggle for true, diverse representation.

As for sports, the 2024 Paris Olympics saw female competitors shine in the limelight (Simone Biles, Imane Khelif and Keely Hodgkinson), despite attempts to bring them down and drum up controversy.

Despite it all, inspirational women around the globe have continuously reminded us of the need to say positive and hopeful. From Vice President Kamala Harris' many speeches and Nicola Coughlan's commentary on perseverance and body image to Gabriela Hearst's fight for a more sustainable future in fashion, the bank of motivational women to turn to when you're feeling depleted has never been so full.

'If there is any hope for the world at all, it does not live in climate change conference rooms or in cities with tall buildings. It lives low, down on the ground, with its arms around the people who go to battle every day to protect their forests, their mountains, and their rivers because they know that the forests, the mountains, and the rivers protect them.'

There’s so much evidence of beauty and magic in this world, too; it’s certainly hard, there’s a lot of suffering in this world – you turn on the television and you can watch it, or you can be living it. But I think that life is about both things.'

'Presidential elections are a form of madness that comes over us once every four years. They fit the great-man or -woman narrative of history, seducing us into forgetting how powerful we are. They erase our memory of grassroots power, direct democracy and civil society.
