14 Best Luxury English Sparkling Wines You Should Try

Our experts reveal the best British bubbles to enjoy ahead of English Wine Week

English sparkling wine has never tasted so good. From blanc de blanc to bacchus, we've called in our resident wine and spirits expert to bring you up to speed and suggest the best bottles ahead of English Wine Week (June 17-25).

What is English sparkling wine?

English sparkling wine is the term used to describe any alcoholic bubbles made in England. There’s no set criteria regarding which grapes are used, but most often it will be a combination of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier, aka the exact same fruit used to create champagne.

You’ll find vineyards all over the country, but the majority are situated in the Southeast, with grapes thriving in the cool-climate, chalky soil.

Almost all English sparkling wine is made in the ‘traditional method’ — the same process used to create champagne, cava and Italy’s franciacorta (although note, not prosecco). No doubt sick of the constant champagne comparisons, Wine GB came up with its own terminology. You’ll now find it referred to as the ‘Great British Classic Method’, with some bottles brandishing the official hallmark.

Is English wine any good?

The UK has had a record-breaking year for accolades, scooping 151 medals at the 2022 Decanter World Wine Awards alone. Not only is that the best in the competition's history, but there was also a Platinum for a still chardonnay from Essex (which has since sold out everywhere, of course).

English sparkling wine food pairings

The fresh, fruity and uplifting nature of the best English sparkling wine lends itself well to summer feasting.

When matching wine with food, it’s always a good idea to remember: ‘what grows together, goes together’. So for that reason you might want to start with fresh Kentish crab, locally caught oysters or smoked salmon blinis. The lemon acidity will cut through any richness.

Bottles with more of a pronounced pinot noir quality will take on charcuterie, and because we’re all about the high-low, we can’t stress how good a glass is with good ol’ fish and chips. Don't knock it until you've tried it.

For dessert? Strawberries and cream, summer pudding, lemon tart or a classic Eton mess will be perfect.

How we test English sparkling wine

Made up of 10 WSET-trained wine and spirits experts and sparkling wine enthusiasts, our testing panel was presented with 29 bottles of English sparkling wine from across the country. They were looking for classic crisp apple, lemon and brioche notes, elegant bubbles and a long, complex finish.

These are the most exciting bottles to enjoy right now:

Hambledon Premiere Cuvée Brut

Premiere Cuvée Brut

Using the classic champagne grape varietals — chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier — Hambledon's English sparkling comes from Hampshire.

With notes of lemon, lime and stone fruit, our panel found this wine light and refreshing, with more ripe peach coming through on the palate. A subtle brioche element adds complexity that fully justifies the price tag.

Chapel Down Brut

Brut

No doubt you'll at least heave heard of Chapel Down. The Kentish vineyard is one of the biggest names in the biz (and the brand also makes a fantastic pinot noir gin).

For this classic brut style, grapes are hand-harvested, with testers picking out crunchy green apple and aromatic elderflower. But it’s the crisp lemongrass that makes this so well suited to pairing with fish and chips — effortlessly cutting through the rich, crunchy batter.

Ridgeview Fitzrovia Brut Rosé English Sparkling Wine

Fitzrovia Brut Rosé English Sparkling Wine

Our go-to when in need of a splash of sunshine-friendly bubbles, Ridgeview’s sparkling rosé has a delicate nose of summer fruits. The chardonnay dominates, bringing toasted brioche to the table and keeping any sweetness firmly in check. We’d serve this with everything from lobster, through to Eton mess.

And — fun fact — this was served to Barack Obama at the Buckingham Palace State Banquet. If it's good enough for Obama...
